SFU Football Alumni Society Shifts Focus to Support B.C. Football Athletes Amidst
Program Cancellation
Pitt Meadows, B.C. – As the two-year anniversary of SFU Football’s cancellation
approaches, the SFU Football Alumni Society (SFUFAS) is reaffirming its dedication to
student-athletes by redirecting its efforts to support football players across British
Columbia in their pursuit of higher education.
Continuing its mission, SFUFAS will support BC amateur football student-athletes through
post-secondary bursaries. In 2024, SFUFAS awarded $20,000 in bursaries to eight
graduating high school student-athletes with commitments to attend a post-secondary
institution in Canada. The Rick Klassen Memorial Golf Classic, scheduled for July 11, 2025,
is the primary fundraising event dedicated to supporting the bursaries. Details about the
2025 bursaries will be announced on May 1, 2025.
The decision to cut the SFU football program has had a profound impact on alumni,
athletes, and supporters. For nearly six decades, SFU Football was more than just a team;
it was a legacy of excellence, community, and opportunity. Despite the program’s
discontinuation, SFUFAS remains committed to nurturing young athletes who aspire to
further their education and football careers.
“Our goal has always been to empower student-athletes,” said ‘Mark Bailey, SFUFAS
President. “While SFU’s decision has forced us to adapt, our commitment remains
unchanged. We are now extending our support to B.C. football players who dream of
continuing their education and pursuing football at the next level.”
